When I started first laparoscopic surgery department in North Maharashtra, many people doubted that an operation through tiny incisions could be safe. What is abdominal wall reconstruction?

The abdominal wall is the layered wall of muscle and connective tissue that holds your organs in place, supports your posture and helps you cough, lift and move. When a hernia forms, especially a large, recurrent or incisional hernia (one that develops at the site of an earlier operation), this wall has weakened or separated. AWR surgery, is a set of techniques that aims not only to close the gap, but to restore the strength and function of the wall, often with mesh reinforcement.

Why robotics?

A robotic platform does not replace a surgeon’s judgement or experience, and it does not operate by itself. The surgeon controls every movement from a console. What the technology adds is a magnified three-dimensional view, instruments that bend and rotate like a wrist in tight spaces, and very steady control during delicate steps. In abdominal wall surgery, these features can help with precise suturing, difficult dissection, closing the large defect and placing mesh in the correct layer.

Which conditions may benefit?

Primary and incisional (scar) hernias of the abdominal wall
Recurrent hernias, where an earlier repair has failed
Selected groin (inguinal) hernias, Umbilical hernias and Diaphragmatic hernias
Selected GI procedures, such as hiatus hernia and reflux surgery and certain bowel operations for Colon, small Intestine, Gall bladder, Stomach, Pancreas and Spleen

Is robotic surgery right for everyone?

No. The best operation is the one that suits you: your hernia, your general health and your goals. For some patients that is robotic surgery, for others laparoscopic or open surgery.
