Hernia Awareness
What is a Hernia?
A bulge caused by organs or tissues pushing through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue.
Common Types:
Inguinal (groin area): Inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall near the groin.
Hiatal (stomach into chest): Hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity.
Umbilical (near navel): Umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine or tissue bulges through the abdominal wall near the belly button (navel).
Incisional (post-surgery site): Incisional hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weakened area in the abdominal wall at the site of a previous surgical incision.
Femoral (upper thigh): A femoral hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscles of the upper thigh, near the groin.
Causes: Heavy lifting, chronic cough, constipation, or weak muscles.
Symptoms: Bulge, pain, or discomfort.Treatment: Surgical repair, often laparoscopic for quicker recovery and less scarring.
